Introduction - The primary aim of this project is to create a map and gazetteer of all the settlements place-names within the National Forest. These are divided into their different categories, based on the etymological and historical evidence. This is the first draft and is far from finished. The main reason for the primary and then later maps would be to see if its possible to separate the different layers of settlement that have occurred over time and then build a picture up of how the landscape was used and settled from the prehistoric times . As with the construction of any guide, the information here has been sorted and refined to suit the parameters of this particular project. This is to say that my own interpretations of the information and later opinions stated in the gazetteer may differ from other peoples. Because of the basic nature of this draft, it is advisable that the reader examines the references in the bibliography for further information.
