Children from Mrs. Weston’s class have been studying Coalville’s long association with the coal-mining industry and took the opportunity to increase their knowledge by taking part in the LITTLE LANDshapes Oral History Programme.
Their guest at the ‘Question Time’ session was Mr. Jakes, who has a wide knowledge of coal-mining and is a life-long resident of the town.
The children also learned about life in Coalville over the past fifty years and of the changes in lifestyle experienced by residents after the end of the Second World War and more recently after the closure of the mines in and around the town.
The school now has its CD recording and, says Mrs. Weston, this will be used as a study template for future years.
