Bagworth in Bloom 2004

An insight into Bagworth
When the coal mine closed in February 1991, it was felt that Bagworth was in decline and was quickly becoming the forgotten village. The people of Bagworth were determined that this should not happen and various enterprises were undertaken to improve the village. One of these was the formation of the Bagworth Forward Group, as an offshoot of the Parish Council. The Parish Council was limited by the grants it could receive.
Bagworth Forward Group Profile

Bagworth Forward Group began in August 2001. In October of that year a constitution was adopted and its aims were:

  • To improve community facilities in Bagworth
  • To enhance the appearance of the village
  • To campaign for an integrated community
  • To raise funds to achieve our purposes
  • To provide access to relevant information
  • To raise awareness of the activities within the village

One of our aims was to renovate the Community Centre or build a new one. We soon became aware that this was a big project and the result was that the Bagworth Forward Group split into two groups. The Management Committee would look towards the building or rebuilding of the Community Centre. Bagworth Forward Group would continue with their efforts to enhance the village.

We now have a committee of 14 members who all work hard to improve life in the village.

Past Projects

We have raised money through grants and through fund raising activities. This money is then ploughed back into the village. We have planted spring bulbs throughout the grass verges of the village. We have purchased 7 self-watering flower troughs which are kept planted throughout the year. We have built and maintained wooden flower troughs around all of the village signs. We have erected stones which are engraved with different words at three entrances to the village. These mark our heritage in the village. They include the name ‘Bageworde’, the name for the village in Domesday. They also refer to the fact that one of the first railways in the world came to Bagworth in 1832.

We have also installed an old mine tub (wagon) on rails and filled it with plants in Main Street. We are going to install a second one in Station Road in 2005.

We have introduced an annual vegetable, flower, cooking and craft village show, the first of which was in August 2003. We have now organised two of these and each year has been bigger and better. August 27 2005 will be the next one.

Current Projects

Image of Bagworth village signWe try to ensure that we have money raising activities which also provide social occasions for the village.
As well as the show, we organise an Easter Egg hunt for the children, a Christmas event and many other social gatherings. We produced a Centre Stage event in 2004 when a theatre company performed the ‘Chaingang Gang’ in the Community Centre. We are also using Centre Screen which provides showings of recent films.

Our projects in the near future include erecting a village sign at the centre of the village and looking into the possibility of erecting boards which contain historical information about different sites in the village.
