Desford & District Local History Society Group Profile

Images of The National Forest
The society was formed in 1982 and we have a constitution. Our main interests are in Desford as a former coal mining area and in framework knitting. We have a collection, from the parish archive, of old photographs, maps and documents about Desford. Members are updated on society activities bi-monthly via letter.

Meeting details:
We meet bi-monthly, plus trips, on the third Tuesday of the month at 7.45pm at St. Martins Church Centre. We currently have 45 members and new members are welcome.

Previous Projects

The society has produced information panels for the village hall, telling the history of the village.
Erection of the Winding Wheel from Desford Pit and the restoration of the village pump.

Current Projects

We are currently working on a book/booklet of 17th century Desford which arose through ongoing research. This is now complete and we are busy writing text and finding images for the book/booklet.
The group are also transcribing the parish registers from the 16th and 18th centuries.
