Nanpantan Victorian Garden Group Profile
|
The Nanpantan Victorian Garden group formed in January 2004. We have practical Volunteer Days every week and the History Group meets every other month. There are currently 30 members and new members are always welcome. We produce a quarterly newsletter and the group has a constitution.
Nanpantan Victorian Garden is the old walled garden to Nanpantan Hall, situated on the outskirts of Loughborough. We have received Heritage Lottery Funding to restore and develop the garden as a community garden. Our main heritage interests lie in researching the original layout of the garden and the buildings, and interpreting this in a forward-looking setting.
Research undertaken by the group explains that the garden and greenhouses are clearly shown on a 1921 Ordnance Survey map, where previously only woodland and field were shown. Both Nanpantan Hall and the gardens have an interesting history and strong associations with the Warner and Paget families.
The old orchard produced several varieties of apple, we believe this included: James Grieve, Ribston Pippin, Worcester Permain, Allenton Pippin and Bramley’s Seedling.
Ernie Stinchcombe, Foreman Gardener for 52 years at the hall between 1932 and 1984, remembers that the ‘Hot House’ was used to grow melons and cucumbers whilst violets were grown, for Mrs. Paget, in the cold frames in the orchard.
Nanpantan Victorian Garden group will be putting skills in gardening, history, DIY, environmental conservation and arts & crafts to good use to renovate this historical garden. We are currently carrying out a period of historical research for one year, then the project is planned to run for at least five years. We will be produce research documents and photographs and be organising community events including orchard pruning, working with living willow, building art pieces in the garden and teaching gardening skills to children. |
