Projects
Our interests are all aspects of Archaeology and Local history in North West Leicestershire and surrounding districts.
Past projects are several fieldwalking surveys and some small-scale excavations. These include excavations of a post medieval clamp kiln and wagon bank. Along with this we have completed an archaeological survey as part of a grant funded project for the Heritage Lottery Fund, which was published. We also have a display at Ashby Museum.
Current projects include Place-Name research for the Landshapes project and a field walking survey of National Forest tender schemes in Swepstone and Heather. The fieldwork information will go onto the Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) for Leicestershire. We hold a database of all our work and some of the other work carried out in the district.
We regularly attend events within the district to promote community archaeology to the public. Our main event is National Archaeology Day held every July. |

Young Historian Project
The Young Historian Project is a project with grant-funding from LANDshapes working with people and youth organisations in the NW Leicestershire and The National Forest to encourage heritage studies and understanding, engaging participants through activities devised by Witan Archaeology including practical hands-on workshops, site visits and theoretical sessions at local venues. The project will work with local historical societies to maximise resources and volunteer input.
