Clip 13 - The Orangery
The audio clips are accompanied by the Audio icon audio icon. To listen to the clips you will need Windows Media Player 9 or 10 or similar software such as Real Player or Winamp.
The main function of the heated Orangery at Calke was to over-winter orange plants, growing in pots. It was built in the 1770s and overlooked a fabulous kitchen garden. An elaborate glass dome was added in the 1800s to create overhead light for the plants. The building was on the verge of collapse and has recently been restored.
