One of the many colourful borders at Calke

The walled garden replaced the original decorative gardens contemporary to and adjoining the house. The new gardens were developed in the 1770s, in response to large scale landscaping of the grounds at Calke, typical of the landscape movement popular at the time. These gardens are some 300 yards from the house.
Walls on all sides create shelter and excellent conditions for growing a range of fruit and vegetables, which would have provided food for the family and their guests.
