At Calke the majority of the fruit trees, planted in the early 1990s, bear apples which have their origins in the East Midlands, for example Beeley Pippin, Newton Wonder, Dumelow's Seedling and Queen Caroline. Preserving local varieties is important at Calke, as important as growing organically and avoiding the use of sprays and pesticides.
