The National Trust is able to employ apprentice gardeners at Calke.

At one time, the Harpur Crewes and neighbouring land owners would have been a significant employer in this part of South Derbyshire, employing workers in the gardens the house, the bakery, in the saw mills and so on. In 1900 there were about 20 garden staff and additional labour was employed on day or week contracts in the busy summer period. By the 1940s the figure had reduced to 11 and to 1 immediately prior to the National Trust acquiring the property in 1985. Today 4 staff are employed in the gardens, aided by apprentices and a team of volunteers.
