The six David Nash True Noon sculptures were commissioned by LANDshapes and form an important part of the project. Community involvement has been one of LANDshapes’ primary aims and involvement with the True Noon project was no exception.
When the LANDshapes team were looking for an artist to fulfil the important commission of creating 6 permanent publicly accessible, physical artworks across the Forest, a willingness to work with members of the local community was paramount. Fortunately for us not only is David a supre mely talented sculptor with a huge international following, and a passion for working in wood, he also has a longstanding zeal for working with local communities. The LANDshapes team would be working with local groups to create the all important landscaping of the sites, but we wanted a way to get local schools involved too.
Luckily for us here at LANDshapes David already had a fantastic team working with him, including education specialist Claire Mieklejohn. Plans were laid and Claire set to work organising what turned out to be a tremendously successful 3 day Continuing Professional Development Course for 7 lucky local teachers and arts officers. The group not only got to go and watch David at work in his studio in North Wales, but got to work with David on the Noon Columns too. They all returned full of fire and ready to take what they had learned out into the schools of the Forest.
Claire has developed a resource pack based on the project which is available for free at the link below |
