Changing landshapes at Rosliston
Spotting the changes
Spotting the changes!
On August 4th 2005 the LANDshapes project and Rosliston Forestry Centre’s Environmental Education project took 8 children, aged 7 – 11, out on a day of fun and learning at Rosliston Forestry Centre.
The session involved the children in an investigation of land use and changing landscapes at Rosliston through a variety of fun activities including ‘FIND the views … from pictures taken 10 years ago’ and ‘Look for the SIGNS OF LIFE an alien might spot!’

All the children were familiar with the Forestry Centre site and quickly became absorbed in the activities, moving in and out of the centre to compare real views with those in old photographs. Slides taken of the site in the 1940s were a source of fascination for the kids who were keen to explore and discover the exact locations in which they were taken, and see the changes that had taken place since.

Using the ‘Site Secrets Trail’ as a starting point the kids looked at maps to help them navigate to Fox Covert, looking at landscape change along the way. In the woods they completed the ‘alien’ part of the trail – working out what they needed to survive and trying to look at the problems of food and shelter from a new perspective. Building a shelter proved to be great fun as well as hard work! Finding out which wood makes the best shelters involved hitting lots of sticks together to see which was the strongest; this was also a great way to learn the names of the trees.

At the end of the session the day was evaluated by the kids who gave the scheme a unanimous vote of approval!
