Historical research into properties in the parish of Newborough
Introduction
LANDshapes is pleased to be assisting Liz Ford from Draycott in the Clay with a community projects grant for her research into Newborough parish properties. Liz aims to photographs farms and houses in this Staffordshire parish and research the history of as many of these buildings as possible. The eastern part of Newborough parish is within The National Forest boundary, and includes Folly Hall, Moat Hill, Ivy Bank Farm, Brick Hill Farm, Eland Lodge, Holly Bush Park, Elton Covert Farm, Dolefoot Farm, Poplars farm, Newborough end Farm and Newborough House Farm...just this side of the parish alone is quite enough to keep Liz busy for a few months!

We look forward to seeing what Liz has found out during her research when she stages an exhibition for the general public. Read how Liz made a start on the project below:

Now that summer holidays are out of the way, and I have visited Lucy Ashworth and been shown the way round the Landshapes web site I am now getting down to my project – to photograph all the properties in the parish of Newborough (a rural village in East Staffordshire, between Burton upon Trent and Uttoxeter). I first took a set of photographs about 15/20 years ago and felt that, as we are now in the 21st century, it was time to update these, and also to try and find out something of the history of some of the properties.

So far I have made a list of all the properties (using an old Electoral Roll), adding in the ones I know have been built or converted. (I think there are 185 houses/farms in all). I have then worked out ‘routes’ around the parish which will enable me to view all the properties without too much back-tracking. I have also begun transcribing the census and begun to make files for each property.

I have visited the Stafford Record Office and the Derbyshire Record Office (Matlock) and begun some research. At Stafford I looked at some of the estate papers for the Chetwynd/Talbot/Earls of Shrewsbury family, who at one time owned large parts of the parish, also I found a Sales Catalogue (1946) for one of the farms and the expenses incurred it trying to buy a leasehold (1813) and details of a ‘perambulation’ around the Manors of Marchington and Agardsley’(1819). At Matlock I found details of land owned by the Chandos-Pole family, (with named fields) plus a map (1869) showing their Newborough estate and (very helpful) adjoining land-owners.
