Young Historian Project

| Update for December 2005 |
| Runic Tablets |
The first event in December was at Holmsdale After school club, Ibstock. On the 8th / 9th of December, we made small clay tablets for the kids to decorate. The class were given copies of the Anglo-Saxon runic alphabet with an English translation of the individual runes. They were then encouraged to translate their names and other words in to runic and cut this into the clay tablets. After the tablets had dried, they can be painted.

Some of these fantastic rune tablets were created by children as young as 4 years old!

Anglo-Saxon runes prove no problem for this group of budding historians

| Field Walking |
| We organized three field walks in December. They can be split into two groups, ‘Family’ and ‘organized parties’. |

Field walking can be a fun event for all the family
|
The ‘Family group’ field walks are set up to help small groups, mainly families, utilize local fields around their communities. The aim is to encourage people to explore their local environment using, in this case, field walking and metal detecting. Both of these field walks were in Overseal with some more coming up in 2006.
|

Many surprising and interesting artefacts have been discovered whilst field walking
|
‘Organized parties’ are set up to give bigger groups of people a chance to experience field walking. These don’t necessary have to be local fields to that group’s community. Both the ‘Family’ and ‘Organized’ party groups have taken part in the complete process of locating, cleaning and identifying the finds. The first ‘group’ fieldwalk was undertaken by Holmsdale After School Club and took place at Cattows Farm, Heather.
